DC Events To Focus on Entrepreneurship Policy

While thousands of events take place around the world during Global Entrepreneurship Week, Washington DC will feature a number of events that focus on national and international issues facing entrepreneurs today. These events are open to the public.
Policy Spotlight for Entrepreneurs
Wednesday November 17th the Consumer Electronics Association’s Innovation Movement and the Kauffman Foundation will host the Policy Spotlight for Entrepreneurship. This one-hour panel will kick off at 10:00 am and will spotlight critical policy challenges, including visas, regulation, taxes and trade.

Entrepreneurship: The Economic and Regulatory Barriers
The U.S. Chamber’s Campaign for Free Enterprise, in partnership with the National Chamber Foundation and Global Entrepreneurship Week/USA will host an event on November 18 to discuss the economic and regulatory barriers that entrepreneurs face today.
During these economically challenging times, it is evident that entrepreneurs can generate jobs and help stimulate the economy. Entrepreneurs developing new technologies and creating companies which will grow rapidly and employing 100+ individuals in the next three to five years, are at the helm of our economic recovery. But these entrepreneurs face economic and regulatory impediments that hinder them from investing in our free enterprise system which will lead to a reenergized economy.

Entrepreneurship Snapshots 2010: Measuring the impact of the Financial Crisis on New Business Registration
November 19th from 2:00 – 4:00 PM the World Bank Group Entrepreneurship Snapshots (WBGES), which tracks new business registration around the world; will discuss data from their recent survey.
The measurement of entrepreneurship in 112 developing and high-income economies over 2004-2009 offers a distinctive and timely snapshot of the impact of the 2008 financial crisis on entrepreneurial activity. These results can help guide effective policy makers and deliver new capabilities for identifying the impact of reforms.

Entrepreneurship in Challenging Times: Implementing Expeditionary Economics
To mark this year’s Global Entrepreneurship Week, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) will host a conference on improving the approaches to economic growth in conflict and natural disaster-affected regions, with a particular focus on private-sector development. The conference will highlight the ways in which the civilian and defense agencies of the U.S. Government, international organizations, and the business community currently are addressing this issue.

Employment Challenges Facing Young People Across the Arab World
On November 17, 2010 during Global Entrepreneurship Week, Gallup and Silatech will host an event to release the latest Silatech Index report titled Voices of Young Arabs. While much is written about the demographic “youth bulge” in the Arab world and its impact on unemployment rates across the region, few have asked young people themselves about the challenges they face in successfully entering the job market. The latest Silatech Index report highlights key trends in attitudes and perceptions among young people across the Arab world, including their desires to start a business, their access to and levels of satisfaction with resources that can help them enter the job market, and the connection between aspirations to migrate and SME-drain.
