Kansas City is the Capital of GEW/USA | Global Entrepreneurship Week / USA

A recent analysis of Inc. 500 data shows that high-growth firms are thriving in regions throughout the U.S., not just in Silicon Valley, Boston and New York. That point is illustrated through Global Entrepreneurship Week by a number of cities and regions–here we take a look at Kansas City.

Global Entrepreneurship Week in Kansas City is a culmination of Missouri and Kansas coming together to strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem within the area. The Kauffman Foundation, as well as local chambers of commerce, government organizations, universities, and businesses will host nearly 40 events during GEW-KC this year.

The following list highlights a few of the major events that will be taking place in Kansas City. A full schedule can be found at KC Source Link, an online resource that links entrepreneurs & small business owners to small business resources in the Kansas City region.

Startup @ Kauffman Demo Day (Nov 12.)

The popular kickoff event from last summer’s One Week KC returns for GEW–KC. The event features presentations and demonstrations from the most promising startups from Kansas City and throughout the Midwest. Entrepreneurs will connect with mentors, partners, and peers in the spirit of building America’s most entrepreneurial city!

“Break a World Record” Speed Networking (Nov. 12)

Join KCSourceLink, the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, and the Kauffman Foundation as they host Kansas City’s attempt to break the Guinness world record for the most people attending a business speed networking event in a single venue.

Ice House Entrepreneurship Facilitator Training (Nov. 12-14)

The Ice House Entrepreneurship Program is a revolutionary new online learning program designed to inspire and engage participants in the fundamental aspects of an entrepreneurial mindset and the unlimited opportunities it can provide.

Google for Entrepreneurs (Nov. 13)

Participants explore the startup world through the idea, build, measure, and monetize stages with Google platforms, tools, and products.

1 Million Cups (Nov. 14)

Kauffman Labs for Enterprise Creation created 1 Million Cups as a simple way to engage entrepreneurs in the Kansas City community. Each week, the 1MC program offers two local upstarts an opportunity to present their companies to a diverse audience of mentors, advisors, and entrepreneurs.

Sprint Reverse Pitch Day (Nov. 14)

Sprint will host several Kansas City corporate business leaders who will share what they are doing in support of Kansas City’s entrepreneurial community.

Minority Business Forum (Nov. 15)

The panel discussion on business opportunities for minority-owned, women-owned and small businesses will be followed by a networking event. The panelists are Kat McDaniel of ColorMark, Martha Gershun of Jackson County CASA, Joe Melookaran of JMA Associates and the Asian Chamber of Commerce, and Dr. Dawnavan Davis of Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Startup Weekend Kansas City (Nov. 16-18)

Startup Weekend is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs around the world. All Startup Weekend events follow the same model: Anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54-hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekend culminates with presentations to local entrepreneurial leaders.
